Roadmap of the Brain (video)

Human Connectome Project

Neuroscience is jaw dropping; each neuron with millions and millions of pathways.  There is no simple redundancy.  We are now exploring the physical sub-straight of memory.  The Human Connectome project will one day show the origins of our consciousness of who we are.  Watch this remarkable video showing how neuroscientists are attempting to map all the neural pathways in the human brain.  One day the physical structure of individual memories and even faulty wiring that may result in some psychiatric conditions will be understood.

Walk to Better Memory (video)

Keep Your Brain Sharp!

Watch Arthur Kramer, University of Illinois at Urbana reporting his research showing a 15% improvement in memory and attention in 6 months.  Older brains have Neuroplasticity to revise, building new neuro-networks with exercise and mental activities.

Learning Styles a Hoax?

Latest Research Suggests Much

Eric Jensen’s article cites research suggesting that Learning Styles may be more a myth than reality; makes one wonder about educational theory and practice based on learning styles.

Music and the Brain

Music training changes brain networks

The DANA website reports the most current research related to brain science. For those of us interested in ways to enhance body brain function, exciting research has been reported relating musical rehearsal on the developing brain. Research by Ellen Winner and Gottfried Schlaug shows, “that children who receive weekly music instruction and practice regularly perform better on sound discrimination and fine motor tasks. Furthermore, brain imaging shows changes to the networks associated with those abilities.” Sound discrimination is central to reading and fine motor movement is key to writing. Let’s convey this research to educators who often fail to understand the importance of music to academic performance.

NCLB Successfully

No Child Left Behind requires an approach that effectively works

Reading, writing, keyboarding, calculating, and all other academic performance skills require a solid sensory input and motor output system. The postings on this Boogie blog have provided the most effective ways to achieve that.

My E-zine http://ezinearticles.com/?No-Child-Left-Behind---Developmental-Steps-to-Success&id=486136 article elaborates what precise skills are needed to succeed.

NOTICE: Please excuse the disruption on this Blogspot site. I have noticed that previous postings have disappeared and other postings show html code. This is very perplexing. I am contacting Blogspot to see what's up. Meanwhile, let's enjoy this Friday the 13th.

Exercise a Happy New You!

2009 is the Time to Create a Happy New You!

Imagine -- you are continually revising your molecular self. Sounds strange. New experiences can create new neural networks and communicating neurochemicals that change the way your body brain thinks, feels and responds... for better or worse.

I am so excited. New research reports that Nerve Growth Factors (BDNF, VEGF, IGF-1, etc.) are produced through exercise. Our Body Brain Boogie Blog will report this research, explaining how you and others can enhance your living and learning potential through physical activity. Be sure to send questions. ideas, articles and links to move our search forward. 2009 is the time.

Thanks for being a vital part of this exciting exploration!

Overcoming Dyslexia: Dr. Sally Shaywitz

http://www.greatschools.net/cgi-bin/showarticle/2758 gives people with Dyslexia hope to revise their body brain in ways that will improve their reading. Dr. Sally Shaywitz, author of Overcoming Dyslexia, has gained national prominence in the area of reading. Her approach includes explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Once again the body brain revises itself when given the opportunity – thank you Sally!

http://www.greatschools.net/ the Great Schools website is a source of many research-based articles. What a wonderful resource!

Read Naturally Shows Its Stuff

See how this reading enhancement program works

Visit http://www.readnaturally.com/approach/steps.htm and see the core steps of Read Naturally, a product designed to effectively involve the body brain. Children choose what to read (great way to build enthusiasm). Children read along to the key words, identifying what they mean. Children make a prediction of what this story is about using the title and key words (I like this creative buy in). Children read along (out loud) as the story is being read to them; notice the repetition! They practice Work Lists to master specific sounds and letter patterns. And they retell the story in their own words.

Read Naturally uses Cold Timing – Graph the Cold Timing Score – Pass Timing – and Graph the Pass Timing Score to improve reading speed and comprehension.

http://www.readnaturally.com/approach/references.htm References show the research supporting the methods.

Dance and the Brain -- Doing and Viewing

Viewing dance sequences and doing them are both significant!

Advanced brain imaging teaches us how the body brain functions best. Scott Grafton, M.D. and Emily Cross, M.S. University of California --Santa Barbara http://www.dana.org/news/publications/detail.aspx?id=10744 reported their research on the DANA Foundation website. It shows how performing actions, and watching others perform the same actions -- produce similar results.

Visit DANA Foundation http://www.dana.org/default.aspx free of charge. It is your source of current body brain research -- a phenomenal website!
